Abandoned Coal Mine Project
In 2005, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Office of Mines and Mineral, Abandoned Mine Reclamation Division in cooperation with the Department of Geography, Laboratory for Applied Spatial Analysis at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville completed digitally scanning and preserving old Vermilion Coal Mine Maps.
The purpose of the project was to preserve these old maps for future reference to mine safety issues. This project was made possible by a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, Mine Safety, and Health Administration.
Most of the map data was compiled and digitized at a scale of 1:62,500. Locations of some features may be offset by 500 feet or more due to errors in the original source maps, the compilation process, digitizing or a combination of these factors. The Vermilion County Recorder of Deeds Office does not guarantee the validity or accuracy of these maps.
