Recycle Coach
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has partnered with Recycle Coach to provide all Illinois residents with access to a comprehensive recycling education and waste management platform. This initiative covers 6,835 units of local government and aims to help residents understand how to properly recycle, dispose of household materials, and reduce contamination at material recovery facilities. Recycle Coach can be accessed by utilizing the widget on this website or downloading the app. Municipalities can also access Recycle Coach, free of charge, to inform residents of special recycling or waste disposal events. Electronics Recycling
The next free electronics recycling collection will be held Oct. 3, 2026 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Danville Area Community College.
The Vermilion County Health Department, in partnership with Danville Area Community College (DACC) and Keep Vermilion County Beautiful (KVCB), typically hosts spring and fall electronics recycling collections. The collection is held at DACC and is open to all Vermilion County residents.
An update to the Consumer Electronics Recycling Act that went into effect Jan. 1, 2026, now allows non-profits, schools, churches, local governments and businesses to also participate in the collection program, provided they follow the program requirements of number of items accepted.
Participants may bring a maximum of seven televisions or computer monitors, in any combination, per household.
Accepted items include:
- Televisions (CRT and flat screen)
- Monitors (CRT and flat screen)
- Computers and laptops
- Printers, scanners, and copiers
- Keyboards, mice, and computer peripherals
- DVD players, VCRs, gaming consoles
- Fax machines, cell phones, PDAs
- Satellite dishes, cable boxes
- Cameras, radios, clocks
- Fans, vacuum cleaners, and wiring
- Holiday Lights
- Air purifiers
- Humidifiers
- Smart boards
- Microwaves
Note: If you have a large piece of equipment, such as an organ or a treadmill, please contact us first so we can ensure the recycler can be prepared to accept it.
Items not accepted include:
- Paint
- Motor oil
- Large appliances
- Dehumidifiers
- Air conditioners, or anything containing coolant
- Bulbs/ballasts
- Capacitors
- Gasy cylinders
- Liquids
- Medical waste
- Smoke detectors
- Vape pens
- Ink and Toner cartridges
A separate battery collection is also held in conjunction with our electronics recycling collection. There will be a table set up to collect batteries before the electronics drop off in the line. The raised terminal of all batteries must be taped, including button and coin cell batteries. Do not cover the battery brand name or chemistry. Battery/Cell Phone Recycling
Illinois’ Portable and Medium-Format Battery Stewardship Act went into effect Jan. 1, 2026. The Act requires that producers selling batteries in Illinois participate in an approved battery stewardship plan which ensures the free collection and recycling of batteries for consumers. The Battery Network is the state-approved program that manages collection and recycling through a network of convenient drop-off locations across Illinois.
The Vermilion County Health Department is an approved drop-off location. Batteries can be dropped off at the front desk during regular business hours (Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.). More information, including other drop-off locations, can be found here: Illinois – The Battery Network
Accepted batteries/cell phones include:
- Single-use
- Lithium Primary
- Carbon Zinc
- Nickel Cadmium
- Rechargeable batteries (up to 11 lbs. and under 300 Watt-hours)
- Lithium Ion
- Small Sealed Lead Acis
- Nickel Cadmium
TERMINALS ON ALL BATTERIES MUST BE TAPED (CLEAR PACKING, ELECTRICAL, OR DUCT TAPE). MASKING, PAINTERS AND SCOTCH TAPE TEND TO PEEL OFF.
Batteries not accepted include:
- Damaged or defective batteries
- Batteries that are part of a recall
- Wet-cell batteries (car batteries)
- Batteries weighing over 11 lbs. or over 300 Watt-hours
- Vape pens
Call the health department for information on the disposal of damaged or defective batteries. Batteries can also be dropped off at the health department during regular business hours. Batteries that are not taped will not be accepted.
Paint Recycling
Illinois has launched a new paint recycling program through PaintCare, allowing residents and businesses to recycle leftover paint conveniently at over 250 drop off sites across the state.
Currently, RP Lumber in Westville and Sherwin Williams in Danville are participating in Vermilion County. Please note, locations accepting paint may change and VCHD may not be notified. For the most up-to-date information, please visit Illinois paint recycling and drop-off locations — PaintCare
PaintCare sites do not accept aerosol coatings, solvents, and products designed and labeled to be used for industrial or non-architectural use.
To be accepted for drop-off, PaintCare products must be in their original containers of no larger than 5 gallons in size, must have the original manufacturer’s printed label on the container, and must be covered with a secured lid. Open (no lid) or leaking cans are not accepted.
If you have a large amount of unwanted paint (100+ gallons), PaintCare offers a free service to painting contractors, property managers, and others with large amounts of leftover architectural paint. More information can be found on PaintCare’s website.
