In his famous speech at Rice University declaring the United States would put a man on the moon, the late President John F. Kennedy remarked that William Bradford, speaking in 1630 about the founding of the Plymouth Bay Colony, said that all great and honorable actions are accompanied with great difficulties, and both must be enterprised and overcome with answerable courage. President Kennedy gave that speech back on September 12, 1962 to a shocked nation that had never imagined people on the moon. He added that if we are to remember one thing, it is that man, in his quest for knowledge and progress, is determined and cannot be deterred.

It was hearing these words a former president spoke 54 year ago that significantly impacted Vermilion County Board Chairman Mike Marron. “I admit it: I am a geek and on a rainy day that kept me away from field work last year, I stumbled upon President Kennedy’s speech about the moon to Rice University on the Internet. It captured me and inspired me to think about our county and to realize that if we could find a way to work together to identify our problems and plan how to address them, then we could maximize our resources and overcome anything to grow into the future,” he says.

After input from the County Board and the people of Vermilion County, Chairman Marron is unveiling a comprehensive plan for the next ten years. “We won’t solve every problem, nor will we make everyone happy, but we have to unite to face our issues and tackle each one as best we are able; we don’t change and grow unless we begin, and we do that with a plan,” Marron says. Thus began Vermilion County 2025 Strategic Planning, a first in long term planning undertaken by the county.

“We began with a handful of County Board members from both political parties who were interested in this idea, and curious to see where it might go; it took us only a brief moment to realize this is bigger than us, and we needed to hear from the people of Vermilion County,” Marron says. So following a traditional SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis session at the county level, Marron and board members took the process out to the public, at community and local government meetings across the county, asking citizens about their views on the county now, and how they see it in the future.
