2.    Voting

You must be registered with your County Clerk in order to vote in all elections.  Polls on all election days are open from:  6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Your precinct number and polling place are shown on your voter identification card.  If you need assistance in determining your polling place, call your Voter Registration Hotline at: (217) 554-1915 or (217) 554-1908.



3.    Registration - Who May Register

To be eligible to register to vote under Illinois law you must be:

    A Citizen of the United States  
 
    18 Years of age by the date of the next election

    A resident of the precinct for thirty (30) days by the date of the next election
    and

    Present two forms of identification, one of which shows your current address
    or register to vote by mail.

If you are not currently registered to vote, or if you wish to change your name or address, you may print off the Mail-In Registration form.  Please fill in the information on the form and mail to:

To register you must:

1.  Be a United States citizen
2.  Be at least 18 years old on or before the next election
3.  Live in your election precinct at least 30 days before the next election
4.  Not be convicted and in jail
5.  Not claim the right to vote anywhere else

If you register to vote by mail, you must vote in person the first time you vote, and provide identification.  Alternatively you may mail a photocopy of a government issued picture I.D. with your registration application.



5.    Where and When You May Register

You may register to vote at the office of your County Clerk.  You also may register at the driver's license examination stations in Tilton and Hoopeston, most municipal and township offices, and many other community and workplace sites.  Contact your County Clerk for additional locations.

Registration is closed for the 28-day period immediately preceding each election and reopens two days after each election.  (Exception: Grace Period)




6.    Maintaining Your Registration

Since the State of Illinois has permanent voter registration, it is not necessary to re-register to vote unless you:

    Change your name;
    Move into Vermilion County from another jurisdiction.

However.......

If you move or if your post office changes your address, you must update your registration to reflect the change.



7.     Change of Address

If you have moved within the jurisdiction of your County Clerk you may update your voter registration by mail or in person at any voter registration site.  Such notice may be given by filling out the reverse of your voter identification card and returning it to your County Clerk.

Changes of address must be received by the County Clerk postmarked no later than 28 days prior to any election.



8.    Voter Registration Search

We offer the option to check your voter registration status online. Simply enter your name and date of birth.  You will be able to view your current voter registration address, polling place, and address of polling place.



9.    Additional Registration Information

Registration closes 28 days before each election.  The office traditionally opens from 9-12 on the four Saturdays preceding this close.  Registration reopens two (2) days after each election.  (Exception: Grace Period)

Check with our office on available Saturday hours or registration at special events.



10.    Grace Period

Grace Period Registration and voting are available from the day after voter registration closes until 7 days prior to an election, at the County Clerk's office.  Two forms of identification are required, at least one of which includes the voter's current address.  The voter may vote in person at that time, or be sent an absentee ballot by mail.
